Li Qingzhao was an extraordinary poetess who wrote about the loves and losses she suffered during her turbulent period of history. I especially enjoy those poems of hers that describe waiting for a lover, or leaving a liaison, for she captures the exquisite mix of joy and regret that belong to such occasions. I have tried to recreate that feeling in a Western setting, based on a part of Fontainbleau Palace outside of Paris.
